Over the course of the last 4 years, Maryland State College system students have been fortunate enough to not incur a tuition increase. Not many(if any) other state education programs can boast of not having a tuition increase for 4 years straight. However, the time has come for Maryland governor (MartinO’Malley ) to try and patch a $2 billion dollar hole in the states operating budget and the education budget is probably going to help fill the void.

Senate President Thomas Miller states, “All good things have to come to an end. If the state and the college system cannot afford another year with no tuition increases whatsoever, then common sense says, ‘Allow a tuition increase.’ ”

The Chancellor (William E. Kirwan) for the Maryland State College system is proposing a budget for a 5% increase while Governor O’Malley is in all likelihood going to push for a more moderate increase of 3%. Analyst state that a 3% tuition increase will generate (or save) about 16 million dollars for the state.

If you would like to learn more about Maryland’s tuition increase, you can read this article from the Baltimore Sun.

What do you think of Maryland’s proposal to increase tuition? My personal opinion is that a tuition freeze for four years is unheard of and an increase in tuition was probably long past expected. However, I don’t live in Maryland and I am not privy to the state’s budget challenges and successes.
